Planetfall units themselves are also more varied and interesting than AoW3 units, though AoW3 still has plenty of variety and there are mods that add tons more. The units and factions in Planetfall are a lot cooler and more exiting than the cast of usual suspects in AoW3. One thing I really like in Planetfall is its style this melange of punk and post-apocalypse I think they're both great games, but AoW3 held my interest longer than Planetfall did, primarily because of that variety in race/class/spec combinations, and because as you mentioned it has a lot of great mods. The minor factions in Planetfall are also much more interesting in design and have a much more impactful presence than the dwellings in AoW3.Ĭombat is great in both games, but different enough that they're both fun. On the down side, the economy in Planetfall is more interesting, research is more varied, there is nothing like anomalous sites or end-game invasions, the Planetfall factions are much more varied and unique than the AoW3 races, and especially their units are much more distinctive. In AoW3, the classes make the biggest difference, races have a pretty big impact even on your class units, and you get to pick magic specialisations on top of that. (Well, Xenoplague does maybe.) One Vanguard playthrough is typically much like another Vanguard playthrough, even if you have Voidtech one game and Promethean tech the next. Most of them do not dramatically change the way you play the game. In Planetfall, the secret techs can feel like a bit of an afterthought. (As a hero with a tank in Planetfall mostly feels like just another tank.)ĪoW3 class/race/specialisation combinations are more interesting. (Though Planetfall does have cooler weapons.) Riding a monster is more fun than driving a vehicle in Planetfall. The variety of magic items you can find is much greater. The hero classes are much more distinct and make your characters much more unique. (Though arguably Shadow Magic does it better still.)ĪoW3 does heroes better. It feels more like exploring a world and uncovering secrets, and less like filling in a grid.ĪoW3 magic is more fun than secret ops in Planetfall. The maps are less predictable, thanks to the lack of a region mechanic and the presence of underground. There is less focus on empire building and economy, but sometimes that is what suits my mood.ĪoW3 does exploration better than Planetfall. AoW3 is still fun after playing Planetfall.
